Invest Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. Marie has excessive, reliable and uninterrupted back-up power capabilities.

Consider this: the Sault area generates about 830 megawatts of electricity, mostly from clean, renewable sources like solar and wind and hydroelectric generation. This is enough electricity to power several hundred thousand homes.

With these projects, Sault Ste. Marie is known throughout the world as the Alternative Energy Capital of North America. Not only do these projects help create a sustainable future, the area's back-up power capabilities also have practical advantages.

An example of this was seen in August 2003 during the Northeast Blackout, when about 65 million people in Ontario and the U.S. where left without power. Residents of Sault Ste. Marie had their electricity restored within a matter of hours, while it took many locations several days to get back online.

The local Public Utilities Commission (PUC) operates a direct water filtration plant at 60 000 m3/day during peak demand. Provisions have been made to extend the plant up to 120 000 m3/day, and water for industrial purposes is also available from area lakes and rivers. Click for current rates.
